Symptoms of problems in the air injection system include a failed emissions test, non functioning BMW Air Pump, backfiring through the exhaust, and an overheated/restricted catalytic converter. The failure of an electric air pump systems may trigger the CHECK ENGINE or SERVICE ENGINE SOON light when a fault occurs.
