The Car that Nobody Wanted
Volkswagen is one of the most popular auto manufacturers in the world. Walk down any street and you will see their cars on every block. Volkswagen auto parts are in huge demand as are the vehicles themselves.
And yet, there was a time that nobody wanted one.
After World War II, the Volkswagen factory lay in ruins. There was still a market for the cars and for Volkswagen auto parts, but no one would run the factory. The British Army controlled it but wanted the civilian auto industry to take it over.
They refused. The British auto industry said that only a "bloody fool" would build cars that are "too ugly and too noisy". The Americans said the car was "not worth a damn". Other countries responded similarly.
The factory continued to struggle, producing cars and Volkswagen auto parts for the British army throughout the 1940s. When Volkswagen tried to expand into the US in 1949, only two cars sold the entire year.
Slowly, the company built up a reputation and production increased. Soon demand for Volkswagen auto parts increased as well and Volkswagen became a key part of the German economic recovery.
